Play, Learn, Explore: What Real Play-Based Learning Looks Like Every Day

If you have recently toured a childcare centre or read up on early childhood education in Australia, you have undoubtedly come across the term “play-based learning.” It is the cornerstone of the national Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). 

Yet, for many parents, the phrase can trigger a bit of anxiety. When you see your child covered in paint or building towers out of blocks, it is natural to wonder: Are they actually learning anything? Shouldn’t they be sitting at a desk with flashcards, studying their ABCs and 123s? 

The short answer is no. For children under five, play is study. Far from being a chaotic free-for-all, true play-based learning is a highly intentional educational approach. Here is a look at what real play-based learning looks like every day at Footsteps Early Learning Centre and how everyday activities build foundational academic skills. 

  1. The Sandpit: A First Lesson in Maths and Physics

When a child is digging and filling buckets in the sandpit, they aren’t just getting messy—they are acting like little scientists and mathematicians. 

  • The Learning in Action: To make a perfect sandcastle, a child has to figure out the exact ratio of wet sand to dry sand. They learn about volume, weight and capacity as they discover that a large bucket holds more sand than a small cup. 
  • The Academic Payoff: This hands-on exploration builds the foundation for spatial awareness, geometry and early physics. 
  1. Water Play: Splashing into STEM

Water play is a favourite daily fixture, especially during the warmer months. While it looks like simple splashing, it is actually a child’s first introduction to the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). 

  • The Learning in Action: By using funnels, pipes and water wheels, children experiment with cause and effect. They observe gravity as water flows downwards and they learn about buoyancy as they test which objects sink and which ones float. 
  • The Academic Payoff: This fosters scientific inquiry, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that worksheets simply cannot teach. 
  1. Sensory Bins and Playdough: Writing Readiness

Before a child can hold a pencil and write their name, they must develop the physical strength in their hands and fingers. 

  • The Learning in Action: Squeezing, rolling and pinching playdough, or using tweezers to pick up small objects in sensory bins, works the intrinsic muscles of the hand. 
  • The Academic Payoff: This builds “fine motor skills.” Strengthening these muscles is a mandatory prerequisite for a proper pencil grip, scissor control and independent drawing later on in primary school. 

Trusting the Process 

At Footsteps Early Learning Centre, our educators purposefully design these environments to spark curiosity and scaffold learning. We don’t just hand over the toys; we ask open-ended questions like, “How many scoops do you think will fill that cup?” or “Why do you think that leaf floats but the pebble sinks?” 

By allowing children to play, learn and explore on their own terms, we aren’t just teaching them facts to memorise—we are teaching them how to learn, ensuring they enter primary school as confident, curious and capable individuals.
