Creative Activities for Preschoolers
To support the learning and development of children ages 3 to 5 years, it’s important for them to engage in creative activities. These will help them develop the following:
- Imagination
- Confidence
- Communication skills
- Social skills
- Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
- Problem solving and decision making
Through creative activities, children will also be able to express themselves and develop their interest in exploration and experiment.
Creative activities for preschoolers
Some of the categories of activities preschoolers can get into are:
- Arts and crafts
- Drama
- Music and dance
For music and dance, one such creative activity is by making a few homemade instruments. For instance, you can let your child make sounds through a saucepan and wooden spoon. This simple activity can stimulate their interests in how different objects sound like. With the resulting sound and rhythm, you can also let your child do some random movements that resemble dancing.
For drama, you can set up a puppet show where you use some available objects and make funny voices and sounds. Also, during story time, you can let your child make animal sounds that are included in the stories. You can start that and then your child will imitate.
For arts and crafts, you can let your child play with different materials such as straws, strings, small plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. Your child will then use those materials and put them together to create something new such as one that resembles a robot or animal. In this activity, your child can learn how to build something new out of what’s already available (this is often the essence of creativity).
The key here is to let children explore and experiment. With available materials and the parents’ guidance, children can safely and enthusiastically play and practice their creativity. Even simple activities are immensely helpful in stimulating their imagination and encouraging them to practice their problem solving and decision making skills. This will support them in their rapid brain development as well as in developing their confidence, which are crucial in getting ready for the big school and beyond.
